Bolnisi – Dmanisi

Bolnisi – Dmanisi

On our one-day tour to Bolnisi – Dmanisi we will visit a bewitching ancient basilica of Bolnisi Sioni, that  is the oldest preserved architectural monuments on the territory of the country. The temple is located 70 km away from Tbilisi, in the South-East of Georgia and dates back to 478-493 A.D., during the rule of legendary King Vakhtang Gorgasali. Bolnisi Sioni Cathedral is known for its Georgian Bolnisi inscriptions. These are one of the oldest historical documents of the Georgian alphabet. Continue our drive to see the archaeological site Dmanisi. It is located  in the Kvemo Kartli region, approximately 93 km southwest of the nation’s capital Tbilisi in the river valley of Mashavera. The hominin site is the earliest of its kind outside Africa, dating back to 1.81 Ma.

Early human (or hominin) fossils, originally named Homo georgicus and now considered Homo erectus georgicus, were found at Dmanisi between 1991 and 2005. At 1.8 million years old, they are now believed to be a subspecies of Homo erectus and not a separate species of Homo. These fossils represent the earliest known human presence in the Europe.
