Sighnaghi – Bodbe

Sighnaghi – Bodbe

One day tour offers a mixture of history, religion, art and winemaking. The main attractions are the Bodbe Monastery and the city of Sighnaghi. The enormous historical and religious significance of Bodbe Monastery derives from the tomb of Saint Nino, who preached the christianity in Georgia in 4th century. St. Nino is one of the most venerated saints of the Georgian Orthodox Church and her attribute, a grapevine cross, is a symbol of Georgian Christianity. It also served as an educational center and has a prominent role in the political life of the country. Beside this, visitors are always excited by a decorated churchyard and the magnificent views at the great Caucasus mountains and Alazani valley.

Next to it is a medieval townlet Sighnaghi, also known as a ,,City of Love”, acquired from the tradition of getting married of many couples. Located on a steep hill and fortified with a huge wall fence and 23 towers, the city was a reliable dwelling for the nearby settlers over the centuries. Its narrow cobblestone streets through the old houses, decorated with wooden ornaments, wine cellars and picturesque landscapes resemble an open-air museum. Furthermore, we will visit The Sighnaghi Museum where the ethnographic collection features five thousand artifacts, rich numismatic, photo, documentary and archeological exhibits and permanent exhibition of the greatest Georgian self-taught artist of the late 19th-early 20th century, Niko Pirosmanashvili, often known simply as Pirosmani.

An attractive vista over the biggest viticulture hub in Georgia – Alazani valley gives us an opportunity to visit one of the best family-run winery and be acquainted with the oldest Georgian wine-making method, take part in the harvesting of wine grapes (subject to seasonality, mostly in September and October), pressing the grape in traditional way, preparing our own Churchkhela (Georgian candy), distilling local brandy Chacha and baking Georgian bread Shoti and taste unique cuisine accompanied organic wines.

It is also possible to spend a night in Sighnaghi and visit other interesting places of Kakheti next day, including King’s Palace in Telavi, Alaverdi Monastery, Wine Museum in Kvareli and the House Museum of Alexander Chavchavadze in Tsinandali. See the link for further details of this wonderful 2-day tour in Kakheti.
